The Manalapan Brook and Lake Watershed Restoration Project is a multi-partner initiative focused on improving water quality, restoring natural habitats, and reducing stormwater impacts throughout the watershed. This system spans from Millstone Township in Monmouth County to DeVoe Lake in Spotswood, Middlesex County, with key restoration efforts centered around Manalapan Lake in Monroe Township.
Guided by a watershed plan approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), the project addresses critical environmental challenges caused by stormwater runoff. Rain events carry sediment, nutrients like phosphorus, and pollutants into the brook and lake, leading to poor water quality, habitat loss, and the buildup of sediment that requires costly dredging.
To combat these issues, project partners have implemented a range of innovative, nature-based solutions designed to reduce runoff, stabilize shorelines, and improve ecological function. These efforts include:
- Naturalizing stormwater basins to better filter pollutants, reduce runoff, and create valuable habitat
- Installing floating wetland islands that use native plants and beneficial microbes to remove excess nutrients from the water
- Restoring lake shorelines with native vegetation to prevent erosion, improve water quality, and enhance the surrounding environment
Long-term success is supported through ongoing maintenance practices such as monitoring, replanting, and invasive species management, ensuring these improvements remain effective over time.
The project is a collaborative effort involving the Freehold Soil Conservation District, Princeton Hydro, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County, Middlesex County agencies, and local municipalities including Monroe and Manalapan.
In addition to technical restoration work, community involvement has played an important role. Volunteer planting events and partnerships with local organizations have helped bring these projects to life while fostering environmental stewardship.
